*Circumstantial evidence within indicates, perhaps, that "my Lady Sandys" is the wife of Sir Edwin Sandys (1561-1629) the Jacobean statesman, member of the Council for Virginia 1607, and Treasurer of the Virginia Company 1619-20; perhaps his 4th wife Catherine (b.1583) whom he married c. 1604 and who bore him 12 children. There are references to "My cousen Sam Sandys" [his 2nd cousin Samuel (d.1651) ?], to "Aunt Frances" [his father, Edwin (1519-1585) Archbishop of York's sister ?], "Mary Spencer" [his daughter Mary who married Richard Spencer ?] and, in the 3rd section, perhaps a continuation by his daughters, references to "sister Kitty" & "sister Pen"[ his children Catherine and Penelope?]. The volume is however undated and only further research may positively establish a connection.

WWI - GALLIPOLI & ELSEWHERE: ROYAL IRISH FUSILIERS: An extensive group of autograph letters (865-pages) from Captain George Montgomery Kidd, M.C. Royal Irish Fusiliers, 5th Battalion, Tenth (Irish) Division. The series comprising 147 letters to his fiancé, later wife, and 51 letters to his parents, 1915 - 1918. The first letter, from Gallipoli, addressed to his fiancé Miss L.N. Kirker c/o his father, Dr. F.W. Kidd, in Dublin, dated 10th August, 1915 & headed, In the trenches is descriptive of his landing at Suvla Bay where he won his Military Cross during the fighting that led to the virtual annihilation of the 5th and 6th battalions. [4-pages 8vo with the original envelope]:

My own Girlie ... Just a line or two to say that I'm still going strong and that I'm very thankful to God for it, for I seem to have been extremely lucky......... We landed under shrapnel fire and just as we got on the beach we had three shells over us - Then we had to advance over a narrow strip of sandy land ......... our platoon were very badly hit - my little lot got through without a casualty - until the afternoon when we had to attack a small hill some three or four miles away, we finally got their positions with high explosives....... I'm not so very fond of this trench business - as there are perpetual snipers if you ever put your head up and we had four men in our company shot yesterday including Major Garstin shot clean through the brain....... I'm the sole survivor of the company at present and I'm looking forward ever so much to getting some sleep and a wash and a general cleanup as I've had none of them for the past three or four days. We've lost altogether 15 officers...... we are supposed to have done very well and that the general was very pleased. I think the men perfectly marvelous and I don't know how they manage to stick it at all when they have had to do without water for nearly twenty hours and at the end of that time only get a mouthful. I don't mind a bit about the bullets in the open but object to the hard work as all the snipers have to aim at is your head and it's rather risky - but I promise you that I'll take good care of myself and I nearly always use a periscope when I can get hold of one ... I must stop now Girlie mine ... very much love from your ever loving Impie.

The 147 letters to his wife are dated 10th Aug. 1915 - 19th Dec. 1918 and amount to 673-pages (343-pages 8vo and 330-pages 4to); all but 9 in their original envelopes. The 51 letters to his parents, dated 15th July 1915 - 30th July 1918 amount to 189-pages (56-pages 8vo and 133-pages 4to); together with a few related letters. With the letters are a photograph of Kidd in uniform, and one of his wife. Together with two albums of earlier negatives and a few contact prints; one relating to Kidd at Trinity College etc. the other to Miss Kircher and family at Craigavad House, Co. Down. Also a newspaper cutting quoting the 'Irish Independent' (ca. Feb. 1916), with portrait of Kidd, under the heading Military Cross Hero - He was at the Suvla Bay landing...... at one time he was the only officer of the 5th and 6th Battalions, with his Colonel, who was not wounded or killed....... after leaving Gallipoli he was all through the advance into Serbia, and in the retreat. He is now in the mountains in the NE of Salonika. After his evacuation from Gallipoli he served with his regiment in Salonika, Egypt, Palestine and, in 1918, France
