KENT: 16TH CENTURY MANUSCRIPT SURVEY. A 16th Century transcription, with additions, of a survey of the Manor of Hadlow, Kent, first compiled in 1480. The manuscript, on 58 leaves folio, bound limp vellum, commenced in 1581 by Roger Lancaster whose name and date are inscribed on the first leaf. Together with a useful 2-page autograph description of this manuscript, prepared by Samuel Peck of Trinity College, Cambridge, 1st Jan. 1772, in which he states that it is "a most exact description of all the Houses, Lands, Military and other Tenures, Rents, Services, Customs, and other particulars with the names of the then tenants, and with a variety of mem'ls and anecdotes, seemingly of great importance to the Rights of the Manor itself, and of great curiosity and assistance to men who study the origin and nature of manors and tenures, and such kind of national antiquities - which the writer of this abstract, and present possessor of this Ms. is particularly fond of". Pages 1-96 comprise the survey of Hadlow and Peck suggests that one leaf is here missing. Pages 99 & 100 form the first part only of the "Appropriation of Peckham Parva by Thomas (Brinton) Bishop of Rochester" and the "Confirmation of the Bishop's Charter by the Prior & Convent of the Monastery of St. Andrews, Rochester" . Pages 101-108 being "The Survey of certain Man'rs of the Right Hon'ble the Lord Abergavennes taken in June 1579. The Manor of Mereworth, with a description of the Park, Demesnes, Rent in corn and money, the Woods, Customs, Services & Free Rents, with some dates of Free deeds, and many useful as well as curious particulars". Pages 109 to 116 describe the manor of West Peckham "with a remarkable exactness of abuttals and boundings".

After his summary Peck has added the footnote "Upon the whole it appears, that Roger Lancaster, being appointed Steward of these Courts, about the year 1581, then undertook to collect and rectify the Rentals of them, transcribing the same in the order of this book - So that the manor of Hadloo or Hadlowe is here described from the authentic Survey of it, taken by Inquest, about the year 1480...... The said transcriber finishing his work 26th July 1583 and bringing down many parcels of land, with the new names of the customary Tenants of them, to the time he concluded this laudable work".

With Peck's postscript in which he notes that "this Paper and the MS. Itself presented to Ld. Le Despencer, Lord of the Manor of Hadlow, 15th Feb. 1773". Vellum binding rather dusty & holed, Peck's leaf of descriptive notes crudely repaired to one corner. c.1581-1583.
