An Inuit model kayak enclosing a seated figure of an Eskimo, carved wood head with pegged body decorated in orange pigment, hide leggings - moss filled, moth damage, one glove lacking; together with a model snow-shoe, and compliment of weapons, with painted wood shafts and marine ivory tips, the figure 10in overall, kayak 27.5in long.

Provenance: acquired by Wm. George Harding, ca. 1901. Harding had accompanied the explorer Harry de Windt on his failed attempt in 1896 to travel overland from New York to Paris, travelling only as far the Siberian shores of Bering Straits. In 1901 another attempt was made by de Windt and Harding, this time attempting the route in reverse, i.e. Paris to New York. The "De Windt Expedition" left Paris on Dec. 19th 1901 and travelled to Moscow and thence to Yakutsk, Verkhoyansk, Nijni-Kolymsk, and the Bering Straits; travelling 11,263 miles and employing 808 horses, 887 reindeer and 114 dogs en route. From East Cape, Bering Straits they travelled to Cape Prince of Wales, Alaska, to Nome City, St. Michael"s, Dawson City and eventually to New York on Aug. 25th 1902, covering a total distance of 18,494 miles. During the journey they spent much time amongst the Inuit peoples of Cape Prince of Wales, Alaska; it was here perhaps that Harding acquired this kayak. Accompanying this lot are photo-copies taken from an album of newscuttings and photographs relating to this expedition (one photograph showing Harding with de Windt); the original album having been retained by the family. An account of the expedition by de Windt "From Paris to New York by Land" was published in 1904.

STOCKTON & DARLINGTON RAILWAY 1821: A fine autograph letter signed from Joseph Pease (1799-1872; railway projector) to Samuel Lloyd dated Darlington, 20th May 1821 "...Thou wouldst probably hear from some quarter that an Act has at length been obtained for making the long proposed Rail way in this County & now in carrying the thing into execution we find there is considerable difference of opinion as to the propriety of laying down a tram way or a Rail way, our advisers from Wales will hear nothing but the former and our Newcastle friends quite laugh at them. I therefore wish to beg thy candid impartial opinion of the subject - the rails used about Newcastle are about 2.5 inches broad & slightly convex - depth varying so as to suit the weight to be carried from 5 inches upwards. On the best Railways thus made as we have no tram roads a good horse of moderate powers will take 10 Tons... ......does thou know of any tram way where the same work can be done... ... ...I rely most on my own opinion... ... ... I am under the unpleasant necessity of asking for half dozen lines in answer to this by 4 days post as our committee of which I am a member meets on the 6th day morning and the subject will be discussed... ... ..." 3-pages 4to with address panel. Later note in ink to address panel. Together with a small quantity of Pease family letters and papers, these generally late 19th Cent.

Edward Pease (1767-1858) and his son Joseph first proposed the construction of a tram-road between Stockton and Darlington in 1818 but it was not until the necessary Act of Parliament received royal assent on 19th April 1821 that work in earnest could commence. Originally it was intended that the cars would be drawn by horses but in the spring of 1821 Pease was approached by an 'engine-wright', George Stephenson, who strongly urged the advantage of steam locomotives.... ..... ...... ......

Medal group: D.S.O.; M.C.; 1914 Star with bar; War Medal; Victory Medal (MID emblem missing); Delhi Durbar Medal; Legion of Honour (Chevalier), and his regimental helmet badge; together with an album containing largely newspaper cuttings recording the progress of the war but also including a Tank Corps Christmas card for 1917 and a typed letter signed, from Clive Wigram, to Col. Uzielli, thanking him for an original drawing (?) of the card that he had sent to the King "His Majesty is delighted to have this sketch of the first Xmas card of the truly British Tank Corps". Together with a duplicated letter, in script, written on the eve of the Battle of Cambrai*, from the Commander of the Tank Corps, Hugh Ellis, dated 19th Nov. 1917, & distributed to tank commanders "Tomorrow the Tank Corps will have the chance for which it has been waiting.....to operate...in the van of battle...It remains for unit commanders and for tank crews to complete the work by judgement & pluck in the battle itself...I propose leading the attack of the centre division" (with a portrait of Ellis mounted to the reverse). 4to, cloth; binding dishevelled.

Col. Uzielli, was Assistant Adjutant and Quartermaster, Machine-Gun Corps (Heavy Branch) and subsequently Deputy Adjutant and Quartermaster General, Tank Corps. He was mentioned in dispatches 5 times and received the Military Cross (M.C.) in 1916, the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O) in 1918, and the Legion of Honour.

* The battle of Cambrai, 20th Nov. 1917 was the first occasion upon which tanks were used en masse; grouped in threes they operated like a chain of mobile armoured batteries in advance of the infantry with startling success, breaching the Hindenburg line between Havrincourt and Masnieres.
