It was in the February of 1922 that Kerr resigned as Private Secretary to Lloyd George, it was in that role that he had been largely responsible for the preface of the Treaty of Versailles. His resignation was to enable him to learn more of Christian Science and to that effect he sailed for America in March 1922; the entries in this notebook largely date from this period. In 1939 he became what Winston Churchill described as 'the greatest Ambassador to the United States we have ever had' and upon his death in 1940 he was given a state funeral in Washington. He was a founder member of Ninth Church of Christ, Scientist, Westminster. [see the Dictionary of National Biography & J.R.M. Butler's biography (1960); a copy of which is included with this lot. |

Also present is an autograph letter from V. Crozier Cotter: 'In the years 1837 - 41 an exploring expedition under Sir James Ross consisting of the vessel 'Erebus' & 'Terror' discovered that sea. My father was acting master...... of the Terror and his captain's name was Crozier. That is how I came to be named Crozier..... I once saw...... a book written by my grandfather Richard Cotter giving an account of the expedition". This letter dated, 43 York St., Southsea, Portsmouth, 23-12-23 |
