262 |
"Johnston was a man of extraordinary active and versatile intelligence, untiring industry, and great personal energy and courage....with acute powers of observation and lucidity of exposition. He was actively instrumental in adding about 400,000 square miles of the African continent to the British Empire and in suppressing the curse of slavery and laying the foundation of good government in the new protectorates" [ see D.N.B.]. A remarkable series of letters from Sir Harry Hamilton Johnston, to various family members, written over a period of sixty years; 150 letters, upwards of 800-pages, together with photographs etc. Letters written during his periods of exploration and colonial administration, some being illustrated in pen & ink, are well represented: Southern Angola (1882) 4 letters; the Kilim-njaro Expedition (1884) 4 letters; whilst Vice Consul in Cameroon and the Niger Delta (1886-1887) 12 letters; whilst British Consul to Mozambique (1889-1891) 9 letters; whilst British Commissioner for Southern Central Africa (1891-1896) 17 letters; & whilst Special Commissioner to Uganda (1900-1901) 4 letters. In a letter headed ‘Bonny (at the mouth of the Bonny River, a branch of the Niger’ [1882] he describes to his father his first impressions of Africa: ‘….’ here for the first time I am setting foot on the spongy soil of Tropical Africa - I can scarcely describe to you how greatly & intensively I have enjoyed my first introduction to Equatorial Nature - I am bewildered with the wealth of novelty around me that I scarcely know how to employ each moment to the best advantage. I have been working steadily all day from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on shore Sketching, Botanizing, Zoologyizing , Anthroplogizing......If Bonny be a true foretaste of what Tropical Africa is to show me, I hardly dare measure the delight that is in store for me....’. A number of the letters written whilst Commissioner for Southern Central Africa, at Zomba, are on paper of his own design, bordered in yellow, black & white being representative of the parallel interests of the African, Asiatic, and European. Together with a group of letters written as a child, with drawings executed at the age of 3 years; a group written whilst a young man travelling in Europe, 1876-1880; a number written whilst travelling or on short term appointments, e.g. Suez 1895, Tunis 1897, ‘Off Sierra Leone’ 1907; and a group written after his retirement from the consular service.
